Pakistan’s disabled golfer tops world event

LAHORE: Pakistan’s Saleem Raza, a disabled golfer who belongs to Gujranwala Golf Club, emerged as the top player in the World Disabled Golf Championship which ended at the Westwood Course in Glasgow, UK, on Thursday . In a contest lasting over three rounds and contested by 76 contestants from all European countries, Saleem Raza successfully elevated himself by emerging as the top player of the championship. The points were calculated on stableford basis and in the first round he aggregated 31 points, 30 on the second day and 37 on the third day which ultimately turned out to be the final day as the fourth round was cancelled because of extremely stormy weather. Talking over the phone, Saleem attributed his success to a lot of hard work and the playing facilities provided to him by Royal Palm Golf Course management. Indeed the Royal Palm Golf Course is comparable with the leading golf courses and practising there really helps. “I am so glad that I have brought this honour for Pakistan and based on this achievement I am getting invitations to play from all over,” he said. “I will now move to Sweden to take part in an international event there.” He also complimented the Punjab Golf Association and Pakistan Golf Federation for lending financial support to him for the trip. Kevin Harrison of Scotland came second and Fleming Rasmuffta of England third in the championship. The event in charge was gladdened by the presence of a competitor from Pakistan and pleasantly surprised that he had performed so well in the championship. —Sports Reporter
