KARACHI: The Supreme Court of Pakistan resumed hearing of the Karachi law and order case on Wednesday at the Karachi registry.
During today’s hearing, the five member bench reviewed the performance of police and Rangers and security arrangements at the prisons. The Chief Justice expressed his anger over the absence of Director General Sindh Rangers from the hearing. He said that Rangers personnel are not serious in solving the law and order issue in the city, and that Police and Rangers are equally responsible to maintain peace.
After being summoned, the DG Rangers appeared before the apex court and said militant wings of political parties were active in Karachi.
The Chief Justice remarked to the Chief Secretary Sindh that he had the support of the IB, ISI and MI and why were criminal elements not eliminated with the help of these institutions.
“When police stations are sold and SHOs are appointed after paying money, what work will they do” Chief Justice Chaudhry asked.
Chief Justice Chaudhry said that the chief secretary was aware of who the extortionists were but would not inform the court.
The hearing came as gory incidents of targeted killings continue to haunt the metropolis.
The court attached a case pertaining to extra ordinary protocol to former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, Qaim Ali Shah, Awais Muzaffar and Rehman Malik, with the Karachi law and order case.
Notices were also been issued to aforesaid personalities along with Sindh Chief Secretary, DG Sindh Rangers, Inspector General of Sindh Police and Sindh Election Commission Secretary.
Former premier Ashraf had approved extra ordinary perks and privileges for him and his cabinet members during the last days of his tenure prompting the chief justice to take suo moto notice.
The hearing of the case has been adjourned till Thursday.
